SALARY RANGE: $3,150 - $4,039 per month plus benefitsThe hiring salary range indicated above has six steps with approximately 5% between each step. New employees normally start at step one and after satisfactory performance during a 12 month probationary period, advance to the second step. Thereafter, annual merit step increases are based upon satisfactory performance. Steps 7-15 are additional merit steps (eligibility every two years) with approximately 2.5% between each step.


ABOUT THE POSITION: To perform a variety of paraprofessional and technical accounting and bookkeeping work involving the processing, maintenance and review of accounting, payroll, grant, tax and trust fund records. There is currently one position available in the Auditor—Controller’s Office, however this recruitment may be used to fill other Accounting Technician openings within the County without reposting.


MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized course work in bookkeeping, accounting or a related field
  • Four years of progressively responsible clerical accounting or bookkeeping experience


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Review, audit and process accounts payable; verify accuracy and budget availability; ensure compliance with county financial management policies and guidelines; work with departmental staff to secure compliance with applicable policies and procedures as necessary.


Review, verify and balance a variety of accounts including special districts, and related trusts, departments and other governmental entities.


Prepare statistical and summary financial reports for the Board of Supervisors and county management staff.


Calculate excise and sales taxes due and compile periodic reports.


Prepare financial and statistical reports on the status of applicable revenues and expenditures including accounts payable and receivable, tax rolls and trust funds.


Monitor departmental budgets, expenditures and revenues; monitor contracts; maintain related records and prepare reports.


Prepare a variety of financial statement and records including spreadsheets, balance sheets, income statements and adjusting and closing balance sheets.


Maintain payroll and personnel records on department employees; prepare, review and submit departmental and/or countywide payroll information; make payroll adjustments for leave, salary changes, overtime and related adjustments.


Prepare and remit required state and federal tax payments.


Answer questions and provide information to employees and the general public; assist auditors and other county staff as needed.


May participate in the selection, training and supervision of clerical accounting staff.


Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.


BENEFITS:CalPERS retirement plan, either 3 @ 60 for Classic, or 2 @ 62; deferred compensation plans available with monthly matching employer contributions; paid holiday, vacation and sick leave; paid health insurance, life insurance, dental insurance and vision insurance for employee. If employee elects not to enroll in County insurance and can provide proof of other group health insurance coverage, they may be eligible for a $300 monthly cash in-lieu benefit. This position is part of the Colusa County Employees Association (CCEA), Miscellaneous Unit.
